Rochester town, Cathedral and Castle

Rochester town, Cathedral and Castle

I had no idea Rochester was so interesting or important

They have a bridge document which pre dates the Magna Carta

The Romans built a bridge across the River Medway as part of Watling Street, carrying traffic from London to Dover (the port for Continental Europe)

In AD 560, King Ethelbert of Kent came to the throne of Kent. Around AD 600 he promulgated a code of about 90 laws defining crimes and punishments. The code was regarded as sufficiently significant that in the twelfth century (over 500 years later) they were written down in the Textus Roffensis, the “Book of [the church of] Rochester”. Although the only surviving copy is the Textus, the laws are referred to by both Bede and Alfred the Great. Æthelberht’s laws are thought to be both the earliest law code of any kind in any Germanic language and their wording the earliest surviving document in the English language.

Rochester is a town and former city in Kent, England. It is located at the lowest bridging point of the River Medway about 30 miles (48 km) from London. The town’s location is due to the bridge which carries the Roman Watling Street (now the A2) over the river.

Wow so much to see and do. One feels the real and pretend magic. Harry Potter is everywhere but so is Darwin, Locke, Newton, so many of major scientists and philosophers as well as politicians.

Did you say Dumbledore? Durdle door

Did you say Dumbledore? Durdle door

Durdle Door (sometimes written Durdle Dor) is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset, England.[1]

It is privately owned by the Welds,[2] a family who owns 12,000 acres (50 km2) in Dorset in the name of the Lulworth Estate.[3] It is open to the public. The name Durdle is derived from the Old English ‘thirl’ meaning bore or drill.[4]

Lulworth Castle, in East Lulworth, Dorset, England, situated south of Wool, is an early 17th-century mock castle. The stone building has now been re-built as a museum. The castle is surrounded by Lulworth Park and the Lulworth Estate.[1]

I must have been 10 years old when I first heard of Stonehenge. Like many people it captured my imagination.  So today was a day at the Stones.

Corfe Castle in the English county of Dorset

Corfe Castle is a fortification standing above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. The first phase was one of the earliest castles in England to be built at least partly using stone when the majority were built with earth and timber. Corfe Castle underwent major structural changes in the 12th and 13th centuries.

British Museum

I decided to spend the whole of the next day in the British Museum. They have over 8 million things in the collection, Many of the Archeological sites I have been to , the good bits were packed up and sent here. They have a dozen rooms of Egyptian stuff, Mummies galore  and history of England.

The door’s open at 10, but you can get into position by 9 am, so at 10.00 I rush the first exihipt with a few dozen people. There is is the Rosette Stone. in the center of hundreds of Egyptian statutes

By 5:30, closing time, I had walked thorough  a hundred rooms , 7 hours , my eyes were glazed over
